Peschici: the name of this small village in Puglia owes its name to migrating Croatian populations, as its etymology suggests: “persek” and “cist” mean clean, pure sand. It’s an old village built on top of a rock and it still shows its mysterious origin in its narrow alleys, its surrounding towers that in the past protected it from Turks’ assaults, its pure white houses, and a series of “trabucchi”, the local ancient fishing machinery. From the top of this rock it’s possible to contemplate both dawn and sunset on the sea. Behind it, the luxurious majesty of the Umbra Forest, and a large valley full of olive trees, lemon trees, maritime pines and prickly pears, ancient plants of a still present Mediterranean scrub.

Peschici, di fondazione slava, come suggerisce l’etimologia del nome “Pesclizo” (dai termini “persek” e “cist”, sabbia pura), è un antico paese arroccato su una rupe che ancora mostra tutto il mistero contenuto nei suoi stretti vicoli, in una fitta serie di torri saracene, nel bagliore delle sue mura bianche, nella numerose e antiche macchine da pesca, i “trabucchi”. Da questa rupe si può ammirare sia l’alba che il tramonto sul mare. E poi, alle sue spalle, la maestosità della Foresta Umbra, e una vasta piana dove ulivi, limoni, pini marittimi e fichi d’india testimoniano che la macchia mediterranea qui è ancora presente, come nella notte dei tempi.
